- HOUSTON -- Houston-based software publisher and developer, Alloy Multimedia, recently won two prestigious awards from the Association of Educational Publishers for its ESLreadingsmart program. The pioneering, Web-based language program for ESL (English as Second Language) won Distinguished Achievement Awards for curriculum in the website technology division.
The Association of Educational Publishers, a national, nonprofit organization, recognized the most outstanding materials in the teaching and learning fields at its annual awards banquet, held in Washington, D. C. on June 19, 2007.
“The boundaries between the book, the computer, and the manipulative are starting to blur, and we’re seeing products that really redefine what we traditionally think of as educational materials,” said Charlene Gaynor, chief executive officer of the Association of Educational Publishers.
Stated Clara M. Rojas, executive director or Alloy Multimedia, and publisher of ESLreadingsmart, “The video game generation has produced students who demand a high degree of interaction. The computer-based, interactive nature of our program fits right in to their needs, requiring a constant back and forth for effective learning.”
ESLreadingsmart.com is a Web-based program for English-as-second language students and teachers from fourth through twelfth grades. It was the first Web-based instructional tool to be adopted by a state board of education (Texas) for ESL classroom instruction, and is now also aligned with reading standards in Florida, California, Ohio, and Arizona.
“With the increased number of immigrant students entering the district on a yearly basis, the ESLreadingsmart program has been instrumental in providing these students with the tools to transition into the general education mainstream,” stated Maydell Jenks, ESL Director, Katy Independent School District.
ESLreadingsmart.com has won numerous awards through the years, in addition to those by the Association of Educational Publishers, including the BESSIE Award and EDDIE award for best ESL site from ComputED Gazette magazine and the Foreign Language award from Media and Methods magazine.
Alloy Multimedia, Inc., publisher and creator of ESLreadingsmart.com, is an international software developer and publisher with offices in Houston, Texas and Caracas, Venezuela.
